List Most dangerous jobs in UK - are your staff prepared? When you think of the deadliest jobs in the UK, you may think of the roles that require people to put their lives on the line everyday. Firefighters, police, security – Not so... the latest fatality data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will really surprise you! According to data obtained by the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 144 workers were killed in 2017/18.

So just what are the Most Dangerous jobs in UK?

Here is the most recent list : -

1. Building construction – 38 deaths
2. Farming – 29 deaths
3. Manufacturing - 15 deaths
4. Transport and storage - 15 deaths
5. Waste - 12 deaths
6. Other - 35 deaths

"Other" includes cases in the following sectors:-

• Communication, business services and finance (11)
• Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; accommodation and food service activities (8)
• Arts, entertainment and recreation; all other service activities (5)
• Public administration; education; human health and social work activities (5)
• Mining and quarrying (4)
• Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning (1)
• Water collection, treatment and supply (1)

Construction topped the list as the deadliest profession in the UK, seeing 38 fatalities in 2017 - 2018  according to the HSEs data. This comes as no surprise considering construction workers are often operating heavy machinery and dealing with hazardous materials. Across all of the professions however, we found that the main cause of fatalities was falling from heights, a mishap that resulted in 35 deaths over the last year. It comes as no surprise then that working at heights is a key part of our top 3 deadliest jobs:  building construction, farming and manufacturing work. (See graph)

(Image HSE) Fatal injuries are thankfully rare events, however with a total of 144 workers killed at work in Great Britain in 2017/18, this number has sadly increased by 9 fatalities from 2016/17, with self employed workers and contractors having the highest rate of fatalities.
