Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is a drone stockpile survey?
With ground control points and RTK positioning we achieve ±2cm positional accuracy and stockpile volume accuracy within ±1.5%. This exceeds the accuracy of manual measurement methods and is documented with every survey report. Accuracy depends on ground control, flying height and surface texture — we state the achieved accuracy and the conditions in every deliverable.
Do you need permission to fly a drone survey over an industrial site?
We hold a CAA General Visual Line of Sight Certificate and Operational Authorisation, which allows us to fly commercial drone operations across the UK. For each site we prepare a site-specific flight plan covering airspace, hazards and permissions. If the site is near an airport or in controlled airspace we arrange approval with the relevant authority before the survey.
Can a drone survey a roof without scaffolding or a MEWP?
Yes. A drone captures high-resolution imagery of every part of the roof from the air, including areas that would be unsafe or impractical to access on foot. This is particularly valuable for fragile roofs, asbestos cement roofs, large industrial buildings and multi-level complexes where scaffold cost would be prohibitive.
What weather stops a drone survey?
We do not fly in wind above 35mph, heavy rain, fog or snow. Light rain and moderate wind are manageable for most survey types. Thermal imaging surveys have additional requirements — they work best in calm conditions with a temperature differential, typically early morning or after sunset. We monitor weather forecasts and will reschedule if conditions are not suitable rather than deliver compromised data.
What files do we receive after a drone survey?
Depending on the survey type: orthomosaic maps (GeoTIFF), 3D point clouds (LAS), digital surface models (GeoTIFF), 3D mesh models (OBJ), CAD-ready files (DXF), volumetric reports (PDF with volumes, cut-and-fill), thermal overlay maps, and annotated photographic inspection reports. We deliver in the formats your team needs for CAD, GIS or management reporting.
How long does a drone survey take on site and how quickly are results delivered?
A typical single-site survey takes 1 to 4 hours on site depending on the area and complexity. Data processing and report generation takes 24 to 48 hours for standard surveys. For monthly monitoring clients we can deliver same-day volume reports by arrangement.
Can you fly inside a port, refinery or steelworks?
Yes. We regularly survey active industrial sites including steelworks, refineries, ports and quarries. Each site requires a specific risk assessment and flight plan. We coordinate with the site safety team, work around operational schedules and follow site-specific permit-to-work procedures. Our pilots are experienced in high-hazard environments.
How much does a drone survey cost?
A standard half-day survey (up to about 10 hectares) starts from around £800 plus VAT. Larger sites, monthly monitoring contracts, thermal surveys and multi-sensor work are quoted individually based on area, complexity and deliverables required. We provide a fixed quote after discussing your requirements — no hidden costs and no day-rate surprises.
Are your pilots CAA authorised and insured?
Yes. Our pilots hold the CAA General Visual Line of Sight Certificate (GVC) and we operate under a current Operational Authorisation. Public liability insurance is in place for every commercial flight. We can provide copies of our authorisation and insurance certificate on request.
Do you cover sites outside Lincolnshire?
Yes. We are based in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and cover the Humber, Grimsby, Hull, Doncaster, Lincoln and Sheffield with no travel charge. The rest of the UK is covered by arrangement with travel included in the quote. We have surveyed sites from Scotland to the south coast.

Where Ground Surveys Fall Short

Traditional ground surveys are slow, expensive and often dangerous. Measuring stockpiles means climbing unstable material. Inspecting roofs means scaffolding or a MEWP. Mapping a large site means days of work with a total station. And the data is outdated before the report arrives.

For sites with height, confined spaces, hazardous materials or simply large areas to cover, a drone survey is faster, safer and more accurate than any ground-based method.

Volumetric analysis visualization showing stockpile measurements

Stockpile and Volumetric Surveys

Our most requested service. Drone-based volumetric surveys measure stockpile volumes to ±1.5% accuracy using photogrammetry — far exceeding manual methods and eliminating the safety risk of climbing stockpiles.

Deliverables include 3D point clouds, digital surface models, cut-and-fill calculations and volume comparison reports against previous surveys. Used by quarries, steelworks, ports and waste management sites for monthly reconciliation and compliance reporting.

The sinter stockpile survey we flew at a North Lincolnshire steelworks identified a £200,000 reconciliation discrepancy in the first month — the kind of error that manual measurement misses entirely.

Photogrammetry and 3D Mapping

Advanced drone with thermal and LiDAR sensors

Thermal Imaging Surveys

Our drones carry radiometric thermal cameras that capture calibrated temperature data across every pixel. This is not a handheld thermal image from the ground — it is a complete thermal map of the structure, processed and overlaid on visible imagery.

Applications: building heat loss and insulation failures, solar panel hotspot and bypass diode fault detection, flat roof moisture ingress mapping, industrial process plant inspection, and electrical infrastructure surveys.

Thermal surveys require the right conditions — typically early morning or after sunset, with a minimum temperature differential. We advise on timing as part of the planning.

Roof Surveys and Inspections

A drone roof survey captures high-resolution imagery of every part of the roof — tiles, flashings, gutters, outlets, membranes and plant equipment — without scaffolding, cherry pickers or rope access.

Particularly valuable for asbestos cement and fragile roofs where foot traffic is unsafe, large industrial roofs where scaffold cost is prohibitive, and multi-building sites where speed matters.

Deliverables include annotated photographic reports, thermal overlays where moisture ingress is suspected, and measured drawings for repair quoting. Reports are used for insurance claims, dilapidation surveys, planned maintenance and pre-acquisition assessments.
